2: Old-generation worry about being deluged with STUFF

I am feeling old as I begin this 23 things class- although I am having fun and am intrigued by it all, I am worried about opening myself up to the electronic world and then getting deluged with "stuff"...like junk mail or something, like joining these I-don't-even-know-what-to-call-thems will have me fending off people or distractions. That makes me sound a curmudgeon. My computer at work wouldn't let me use Picasa, for example- a warning of spyware came up. And joining Yahoo I found a whole page of "marketing communications" I had to uncheck. Perhaps young people don't even think of this. This is my first substantive post, and it feels like thinking aloud.

2: Introducing myself

Hi! I am doing this for a class on Web 2.0 and feel rather old-style in that I can't yet imagine who would want to read my blogs except me, my boyfriend and my cats. I am a librarian at Oakland Public Library (for 4 1/2 more years!) I moved to Berkeley in 1981 for library school, from upstate New York. I work in the Art, Music, History and Literature Department. I have created the library's disability services and that work, which I am passionate about, takes about half my time. My final goal is to get it institutionalized.
Other things I love are silent film, travel and languages, motorcycles, reading, and target shooting. I lived in Europe for 5 years and learned Catalan. Once I retire I hope to do house trades for a place in Europe (Venice, Florence, Barcelona and the Dingle peninsula in Ireland) 3 months every year.
